Help with Some Hank (and Jerry Byrd) - "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living"

Hey kids,

I'm doing the annual tribute to Hank Williams show this Sunday, playing my D-8 Pro in the backing band. One of the vocalists has chosen "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living", which I believe is from the last session with Jerry Byrd, The steel playing is sublime, but I can't quite nail it. Any idea what tuning? Any other tips? It's in E, btw,

Thanks, Mike……..it’s right at the top, the intro, especially the line with the major 7th in it.

(Although I’m starting to wonder if it’s not a harmony line on guitar I’m hearing??)

Thanks. The fiddle player and I worked it out, pretty closely.

I had been trying to play both parts on steel, and it’s such an odd harmony, I couldn’t get it to sit right on C6.

I've been trying to play steel for 6 months now and have been procrastinating a little on learning vocabulary. This post inspired me to try and dig into the song to see if I could transcribe some of Jerry Byrd's parts.

Holy wow there are just so many incredible ideas in there. And the execution. Just wow.

That fill he plays over the V chord at about 55 seconds in is so hip.
